This isn't so much a tale of the hazards of the Mulholland Drive "raceway" as it is of the failure of the extracting equipment of the 20th century.  Everyone knows that a straightaway followed by tight corners, sweeping turns, sheer cliffs and now, ogling celebrity home tour vans is a recipe for vehicles to end up mangled at the bottom from the pavement above.
