Corner Shop — James’ Garage

Words and Photos: Nathanael Napolitano

In this edition of Corner Shop, we visit James’ garage at his house, in Southern California, which isn’t a shop, and James isn’t a mechanic, but the house is on a corner—so that’ll have to do.

I arrive on a sunny summer day. The sun will set in about two hours. There is a cool breeze that gently pulls the heat of the afternoon off of your sticky skin. James is standing in his garden drinking tea, eating an English muffin with jam, and watering the ivy growing up the side of his garage. He is wearing a green beanie and has a gigantic beard like an off-season Santa Claus imposter waiting for the holiday Christmas photo booths to open back up so he can get started working again. His look can only be described as angry-cuddler. He is a life-size garden gnome.
